Cyber Security, It's Scary Out There

September 30th, 2017 by William Wentowski

cyber security

We could make this a spooky Halloween themed article. It would get a few laughs, have some cheesy puns, and would be a grave (ha!) disservice to our customers. Companies are not doing enough for their cyber security, and it's not a corny joke. candy corn(sorry)

Another week, another hack. This time it was Equifax.

Thanks to their poor security practices, they exposed virtually every American to identity theft. If you have interacted with a financial institution in that last decade, Equifax lost your information. They failed to patch a known security flaw for two months, according to Ars Technica. Equifax's Argentina branch also had a massive security flaw in their use of "admin" as both login and password for their employee portal.

If a company that spends millions (hopefully) of dollars on their cyber security is doing such a poor job, what chance do you have? A much better one, but only if you act in advance. Being on the receiving end of a hack or virus isn't a matter of if, it is a matter of when. Likewise, it is not about having the most secure network in the world, but of having one that is too much of a hassle to break into.

Answer the following questions honestly:

  • Do you know who has login access to your systems?
    • If multiple people/companies, what is their login?
  • Do your employees know proper security procedures?
    • Has anyone ever trained them on such procedures?
  • Do you know the make/model of your firewall?
    • When was it last updated?
    • Did anyone audit it to make sure it is working?

If you answered "I don't know" to even one of these questions, you need to take a hard look at your security. Call us (205-942-6532) to discuss and arrange a security audit.

BTS is dedicated to your network security.

We ensure secure administrative logins and restricted access rights. We provide firewalls that are constantly updated and checked. We provide user training, often overlooked, to make sure your employees can identify security threats. BTS also makes sure that all of our staff are up to date on emerging threats and security best practices through training and IT trade events (we are sending technicians to Navigate 2017). Let us help!
